SEO: What is it and what isn’t it?

  • by

To get this conversation started, let’s go back to the beginning. What is the meaning of the SEO acronym? It is Search Engine Optimization.

Thank you marketing guru….what does that mean?

Search Engine Optimization is the practice of how to modify, adapt or target your content for a search engine so it will show up in search results. For example, let’s say you have a really cool blog post about how to wash a dog. You posted it on your website then leaned back in your chair, waiting for traffic to start heading to your blog page. After a few hours, no one has visited, and you’re left sitting with great content and no customers.

What went wrong?

Well, let’s start with the title. You decided to be catchy and titled your post, “Hey, read this!”. Error number one: your title doesn’t tell the search engine what your post is about. When searching for “how do I wash my dog”, the search engine isn’t going to answer with “Hey, read this!”. Title your post what you want your reader and the search engine to know. A clear and concise title is a perfect example of optimization.

So what isn’t SEO?

First, it cannot and will not turn your business into an overnight success. If you don’t have great content or a great website, SEO won’t help you with that. It will see your pictures of cats and immediately head in the opposite direction. It’s not the content clean up patrol.

Unfortunately, you may have heard that a few keyword tricks and increasing your keyword density will enhance your presence in search. And it might. This kind of success is short lived and will not save your business in the long run. Like mama always said, “success can leave as quickly as it came”. Don’t bet your business on cheap SEO tricks.
